NHS JOINS FORCES WITH COMMUNITY AND VOLUNTRAY SECTOR TO IMPROVE OUR HEALTH

Commitment from North Cumbria’s Primary Care Trusts and the Voluntary and Community and Sector (VCS) to improve the health of the population was sealed in an official ‘Compact’ or agreement – a first for North Cumbria.  An official launch of the Compact took place at the Carlisle CVS Centenary Conference, ‘Rising to the Challenge’, on Thursday 7 October 2004.

Work on this important partnership started in May this year with a conference hosted by North Cumbria Action for Health, a group of representatives from local voluntary and community groups working in the field of health or social care. The compact sets out a partnership between the Primary Care Trusts and voluntary and community sector but also commits to include other NHS organisations and other partners working in North Cumbria in the future.

Jessica Riddle, Chairman of Carlisle CVS said: “I’m delighted that this important agreement was launched at our centenary conference. It’s very fitting as we look to the future and have representatives from national, regional and local voluntary organisations and statutory agencies attending”.

Nigel Woodcock, Chief Executive of North Cumbria’s Primary Care Trusts said: “We’re committed to working with voluntary and community agencies to improve services for people in North Cumbria.  Voluntary and community agencies have a strength of expertise and skills to offer, and we are delighted to be able to share these.”

The Rising to the Challenge conference was the last celebration event of the Carlisle CVS’s centenary year and aimed to raise awareness of the potential opportunities and challenges facing voluntary and community groups over the coming years.
